  • Slate Creek offers 3.5 miles of continuous class 5 whitewater with absolutely no flat water sections.  The gradient ranges from 100 to 250 feet per mile and introduces rapids one right after the other.  Wet Exits result in long, dangerous swims.  Rescues may be difficult to impossible due to the narrow creek gorge.  Walking out is difficult but possible.  Several drops end in aggressive, "must run" holes especially at flows above 1.5 feet on the bridge gage.  Back enders are common (even in a Descente!) and hole riding is seen frequently.  The first timer should either plan on a long day with several scouts, or look into hiring a guide.  Groups larger than 4 will take considerably longer.  Leave the camera at home for the first time down and just stay focused on the run to make it out safely.

And then it's time to "Ante-Up"

Poker.jpg (34574 bytes)

"Poker Falls" introduces the crux of the entire run.  Scout on the right.  This rapid got its name after Ron Rogers on the first descente team stepped on a fire poker and cut his foot during the scout.   The rapid was dubbed Poker Falls and the subsequent names from the gamming industry followed.

"Full House" is packed with a pair of this and three of you know what!.  Pay attention.  The fun line is on the left.  A wet exit here may result in different view of the waterfall just down stream.

"Black Jack Falls" (21') brings the big stuff to a close.  Look for easy class 5  for the remaining 1.5 miles of continuous creekin. This lower section is a good warm up if you'd like to test your "creekin skills" out before attempting the big drops above.
